Recently i've been busy on the CD purchasing front. I've managed to aquire 5 new albums and a mini live LP so I thought that i'd share them. Note now that I am not a recognised reviewer and am not gifted in this field of writing, nor am I attempting to be. These are purely my opinions.

1) Guns 'n' Roses: Appetite for Destruction:- I've never really listened to G'n'R before and only bought the album on the back of reading a few reviews on Velvet Revolver the post G'n'R band. I'd have to say that this album is a very much over-rated one. The sound quality is poor and Axl Rose's vocals are strained at best, however tracks 6-9 make the album appear better than it actually probably is. 'Sweet child o'mine' is certainly an excellent song and Slash proves himself to be a worthy (not great) guitarist. Overall i'd say 3/5, a decent album but nothing special.

2) Stereophonics: Word Gets Around:- Stereophonics now are laughable but in 1997 they produced one of the best albums of that illustrious decade. The album is classic raw, guitar led rock at its best. It's such a shame that they never repeated this brilliance. Particularily good tracks include 'Local boy in the photograph' and 'thousand trees'. 4/5 for a very good album.

3) Seafood: As the crow flys:- a new and exciting band for me. Described as a 'post grunge' London rock band, they are certianly very interesting. Theres a strong feeling of 'kind of like...' to Seafood. Some tracks are pretty rocky a la Wheezer, early Radiohead, Feeder etc whilst others are more beautiful ballads similar to Coldplay or R.E.M. As the crow flys is a good rock album that won't particularily inspire anyone but should be recognised for what it is. A good 4/5 for this exciting new (for me) band.

4) The Strokes: Room on fire:- The Strokes ae another band that i've never really got into. I got this album basically because i felt like it and i'm glad I did. The Strokes have a firly unique style in that they are very basic and lazy and yet at the same time utterly thorough. I really enjoy listening to this album as I revise because its just so relaxing. A good 3.5/5 for this album although I think it will probably grow more on me.

5) Blink 182: Blink 182:- Out of the three people that I know read this blog i'm sure non will like Blink but hey, I don't care. Blink aren't a musically sound band, they average about 5 chords a song, have heavy bass lines and thumping drum tracks but at the end of the day make cool songs. I've been off Blink for a while now but this album has brought them back home. Blink will always remind me off happy and free times, i'm not sure why but they just do. BLINK ROCK! Not as good as Enema but still a delicious 4/5.

6) Lowdrive- The Newtz Sessions:- My new band :) Lowdrive rock and i'm tipping them for greatness. This is a really cool live album and even though the recording isn't brilliant the songs all sound great. It was free aswell so hey, you can't get better than that. 4/5 watch this space and remember the name: Lowdrive.

Listening to now: Brand New- Soco Amaretto Lime

Is anyone actually suprised?

Ok so the referee was appalling, Portugal dived like crazy, the penalty shoot out frankly was a farce but England did not deserve to go through. Why? YOU CANNOT DEFEND THAT DEEPLY FOR THE WHOLE SECOND HALF WITH JUST ONE GOAL!!! England were appaling and i have just three more comments (all of which are my opinion)

1) Beckham was a disgrace, the penalty capped an awful performance and an awful tournament from a man who shouldn't be in the side least of all as captain.
2) Owen was back. He was the only player (maybe except from Gerrard) who really looked like he wanted to do something, great goal and brilliant performance, lets try and give him so more chances next time...
3) THe reason England are so bad can be summed up in two words (proper nouns in fact) PHIL NEVILLE. England must be bad if he can get into the team.

To be honest i'm not upset. I was upset when we went out of Euro '96 and France '98 but since then... you come to expect England to lose.

Here are my predictions for the Euro 2004 quarter finals:

Portugal v England:- I really hope England but home advantage for me says 2-1 Portugal.

France v Greece:- France have played poorly and Greece extremely well but i'm still going 2-0 France.

Holland v Sweden:- I'm going to say Holland 2-1 in extra time although I hope Sweden win.

Denmark v Czech Republic:- 3-1 to the Czech's, both they and Nedved look on fire.

So those are my predictions, i could be wrong, in fact I hope i'm wrong about England but there we go.

Is this a little too far? Maybe not, maybe no player has made such an impact since Pele in 1958.

Well I am pleasantly slightly surprised

Well done England, an excellent display of attacking football. Patricular mention to Rooney, Scholes, Lampard and Owen who all played magnificently. The defense was lamentable and Beckham was non-existent but hey, good game, great win. Only the Home nation Portugal, who were poor against Greece but a lot better against Russia and Spain, to come.

Come on England

Owen was significantly better today, lets hope he is back to his best against Portugal.

Is he really my age?!
So, England kick off their final group match against Croatia today in just over two hours time. I'm slightly pessimistic for a good result but nevertheless I shall be supporting 'the boys' whole-heartedly. I'm pessimistic because England have a tendency to be beaten by teams they should really beat. I mean England aren't good but then neither are Croatia in reality. Yes I know that they came third in the 1998 World Cup but they are not the team of 'star-studded' internationals, such as Davor Suker, Robert Prosinecki or Zvonimir Boban, that they were. Defensively Croatia are sound, ranked 5th in the tournament by UEFA but going forward they are weak (ranked only ahead of Latvia) having said that they attacked strongly against France and succeeded in getting two valuable goals.

My point (tenuous as it is) is that England should beat Croatia and hopefully they will. But if they play defensively as they did against France and concede a goal I shall not be surprised.

Come on England.

Two more things here is the latest Fink Tank predictions for the tournament.

and Secondly: "I think you could say that England are better than Portugal, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Czech Rep or at least could beat them without looking too special."

Did you see the Czech today? Nedved is the player of the tournament thus far and if England were to play them... :-)
After being ridiculed recently for my honest and personal views on Enlgand's Euro 2004 campaign (see here ) I thought I would publicly defend my friend the Fink Tank.

The Fink Tank is a statistical generator that (umm) generates predictions based on logical factors (such as form etc) It was created by a bunch of students and tutors at The University of Warwick (clearly no mugs then) and has been found to be very accurate.
Check this to get a better explanation of how it works.

Now why do I keep referring to it? Well you see, all it does is predict results based on statistics and really... theres no point to it. I mean Greece proved it wrong after all didn't they? Well yes and no. Greece proved that statistics mean nothing in reality but at the same time statistics can't be ignored because generally they are accurate. Just see the 16% chance of England losing to France...
